Features of Phineus

File Menu

Open - Displays a dialog box which allows you to open up an image or group of images. To select a group of images, pick on the first name in the list, scroll to the bottom, then click on the last name in the list while holding down the shift key. Alternately you can select images from My Computer and drag them onto Phineus. Once you've opened images, you can use Find or the Show options to display possible matches on the results half of the window.

Open All - Opens up all the images that are in the database.

Open By Date - Displays a dialog box that lists the dates of all the images in the database. You can pick any of the dates you're interested in. There are a couple methods for picking multiple dates. If you hold down the control key while clicking on a date, that date will be added to the list of selected dates. Or you can click on the first date you're interested in, scroll down, then click on the last date while holding down the shift key to select a whole range of dates. When you're ready, pick the Show button to open up all the images from the selected dates.

Open Unchecked - This opens all the images that don't have anyone's name entered into the checker field.

Open Uncategorized - Opens all the images in the database that haven't yet been placed in any categories.

List Open Images - Brings up a dialog box that lists all the images that are currently opened. You can pick any name from the list to open if you wish.

Edit Menu

Mirror - Mirrors the currently open image. It's recommended that all dolphins should be facing to the left for consistency in identifying matches. If the fin is faced right, mirror it. The fact that the image should be mirrored will be remembered for all future viewings of the image. Note that this doesn't modify the image file in any way.

Markup - Allows you to start marking up the image. See markup for more details.

Remove Markup - Removes all the markup from the currently opened image. You can re-markup the image if you wish. Note that this doesn't affect any of the images in the results area.

Options - Displays the Options dialog. Currently this allows you to change the base path. The base path is used for storing the names of all the images. If the images are stored in a different directory structure on a different machine, you can copy across the database file (data.fin) and simply change the base path to have it address all the images in their new location.

View Menu

Find Matches - Uses the markup to find potential matches for the currently open image. The images are displayed in a scrollable area on the right half of the window.

Mark - Marks the currently open image and the currently selected image from the results area as a match. It will prompt you for a new name if appropriate. See matching for more information.

Show Previous Matches - Displays all the matches for the currently open image in the results area of the window. The matches are all the images with the same name.

Show All - Displays all the images from the database in the results area.

Show By Name - Brings up a dialog box listing all the unique names and temporary names of dolphins in the database. Names beginning with * are temporary names and apply to matches from the same day. You can pick one or more names from the list. When ready, choose Show to display all the images with the selected names in the results area.

Show By Category - Brings up a dialog box listing all the various categories. You can choose one or more categories. You can also choose to display all the images that are in at least one category or in each of the selected categories. Picking Show will display all the images from the appropriate categories in the results area. See methods for more information
