Punakaiki was a stop we made during the trip from Franz Josef to Nelson, along the west coast. It's got it's own little climate that's more tropical than the surrounding area. It's the furthest south you find palm trees along the coast. The other thing that made this stop interesting was the rock formations. They're alternating layers of sandstone and limestone - no one has quite figured out how they were formed.
